Oct 15, 2017 | Men's Golf
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Kansas State sophomore men's golfer Ben Fernandez carded an even-par 72 on Sunday to rise five spots on the leaderboard during the final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club.
Fernandez finished with a 54-hole score of 1-under par 215 to tie for 25th, his second-straight tournament shooting under par. The Southlake, Texas, native registered two birdies as well as an eagle on No. 14 during the final round.
As a team, the Wildcats carded an 11-over par 299 on Sunday as they finished in 14th at 16-over par 880.
"Ben had another solid round today and played steady the entire tournament," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It was a disappointing finish for us as a team, especially since I know we are much better than how we played this week. We just have to put it behind us, focus on the areas we need to improve on and get ready for Greensboro in a couple weeks."
Jacob Eklund finished one shot behind Fernandez as he tied for 32nd at even-par 216. Trent Evans finished in a tie for 59th at 7-over par 223, while Matthieu Caron tied for 75th at 12-over par 228 and Jeremy Gandon placed 79th at 14-over par 230.
Penn State recorded a wire-to-wire victory at 31-under par 833, nine strokes ahead of second-place Kent State. Missouri's Hayden Buckley maintained his top position on the individual leaderboard as he won the event at 17-under par 199.
Kansas State will be back in action October 28-29 at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate held at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
