Jaffrey, K-State Out Front in Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Led by senior Connie Jaffrey, who tied the second-lowest round in school history at 6-under par 66, the Kansas State women's team leads the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational following the first round on Sunday at the par-72, 6,235-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.
The Wildcats shot a 1-under par 287, which was tied for the sixth-best round in tournament history, as they hold a commanding 12-stroke lead over second-place Tulsa.
Jaffrey leads the field and is one of four Wildcats in the top five. The Kilwinning, Scotland, native is followed on the leaderboard by junior Chloe Weir in second place at 1-under par 71 and freshman Reid Isaac, who is tied for third an even-par 72.
Competing as an individual, freshman Ella Adams is tied with Isaac for third place.
"Connie played great," said head coach Kristi Knight. "She had a great day and played really well. I'm really proud of all the girls today. They all stayed patient, stayed composed and played with confidence. I thought we did a great job today."
Jaffrey's first-round score of 6-under par 66 tied for the lowest round in Sunflower Invitational history and was one stroke better than her previous career-low round. The junior carded seven birdies and just one bogey in the round.
Weir was 2-over par at the turn but fired a 3-under on the back nine with four birdies and a bogey.
Sophomore Tash Carlsson and freshman Darby Deans carded a 6-over par 78 and are tied for 27th place, while freshman Niamh McSherry is tied for 36th at 7-over par 79.
Following K-State and Tulsa on the leaderboard is North Texas, which is in third place 15-over par 303.
The Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational will resume Monday with an 8 a.m., start to the second round. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com and results will be available at www.kstatesports.com after play on Monday.
