MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's tennis team will kick off its 2017 fall season at two invitational tournaments beginning Thursday.
Head coach Danielle Steinberg will send returning players Carolina Costamagna and Ines Mesquita along with newcomers Meghan King and Anna Turco the Mizzou Invitational in Columbia, Missouri, at the Mizzou Tennis Complex starting Thursday and completing Saturday. Costamagna and Turco, and Mesquita and King will also pair as doubles teams.
K-State will send two freshmen, Maria Linares and Rosanna Maffei, to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Regional in Stillwater, Oklahoma, at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center beginning Sunday, September 24.
Overall, K-State will send four fresh faces to participate in tournaments this weekend, summing up the No. 14 recruiting class in the country, according to TennisRecruiting.net.
"We are excited to finally get out there and compete this weekend", said Steinberg. "This should be a good opportunity for us to see where we are with certain aspects, and really expose what we need to work on in the next few weeks.
"The Mizzou invite will be a great chance for us to get many high-level matches against opponents we will meet in the spring," Steinberg added. "We will also be able to play around with our new doubles teams. For Maria (Linares) and Rosy (Maffei), playing pro tournaments this fall was part of the plan. Both have professional aspirations after college and this is a great chance for them to play at that level during their time here."
Costamagna, native of Córdoba, Argentina, posted a bounce-back junior season as the primary No. 1 singles player, recording a 19-15 singles record compared to her 15-20 mark her sophomore year. In doubles play, Costamagna finished 17-10 primarily playing No. 2 doubles.
Mesquita is coming off a strong freshman spring season, including being named a Big 12 Player of the week, going 11-10 in singles play, primarily playing the No. 3 singles slot. In doubles play, Mesquita played all three positions and finished 12-10.
King, born in Overland Park, Kansas, joined the Wildcats as a freshman in the spring of 2017 after transferring from Wofford College. Coming out of high school, King was three-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net. King did not appear in any matches last season.
Turco will begin her K-State career as a freshman from Mondovi, Italy.
Linares, the No. 1 ranked player in Venezuela under 18, comes to K-State as one of the highest-rated recruits in recent years. Linares is currently ranked as the No. 145 junior in the world by the ITF.
Maffei, a native of Atripalda, Italy, achieved a No. 37 European junior ranking and an International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking as high as No. 225. In 2013, she reached the semifinals of the Italian Junior Championships and has claimed two ITF junior doubles titles in her career.
