K-State Falls on Road at UNI

WATERLOO, Iowa – Kansas State looked to avenge a loss from its inaugural home match in 2016, but Northern Iowa tallied a late first half goal on Sunday to down the Wildcats 1-0 at Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
"It was an unexpected turn of events in terms of some reliable defenders going down in the first five minutes," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "It didn't allow us to create our tempo, especially when we wanted to play out of the back. It gave us some adversity to face. We kept our composure. If we could have gotten out of the half without allowing the set piece we could have made the right adjustments and the game could have been interesting in the second half. We dug ourselves a hole and we couldn't get out of it."
K-State (2-2-1) almost conquered the wind in their face in the first half but a controversial decision on a Northern Iowa (5-0-0) corner kick resulted in a Panthers goal seconds before halftime. The Panthers' Haley Kerns sent a corner kick high into the southwest wind. The ball twisted toward the near post and K-State goalkeeper Miranda Larkin appeared to bat the ball off her line. As play continued, the official whistled the play dead and rewarded Kerns with a goal after consulting with the assistant referee.
In the 2016 meeting between the teams in Manhattan, UNI scored on a corner kick before halftime which Northern Iowa went on to win, 2-1.
Up until the first half goal, Larkin built her scoreless mark to 266:11, breaking her own K-State school record from last season of 243:52 last year by Larkin.
Overall, Kansas State finished with 10 shots including six on goal. Northern Iowa recorded 13 shots and four on goal. K-State is now 0-5-0 against teams from the Missouri Valley.
Kansas State will play three of its next four games at the K-State Soccer Complex, as the Wildcats host Central Arkansas on Friday and Creighton on Sunday, September 10. Standing room only tickets are available for the two matches.
