During his collegiate days, Watson dominated all of the middle distance and distance events of the Missouri Valley Conference and became K-State’s first NCAA Track champion when he captured the one-mile race in 1921.
He was named one of America’s premier distance runners of the 1920’s by the Athletic Congress.
Watson also had great success in the Olympics during the 1920’s. He was a member of the United States Olympic team three times during his life. In 1920, Watson placed seventh in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase in Antwerp.
In 1924, he ran the 1,500 Meters in Paris, and finished his Olympic fairy tale in 1928, by placing seventh in the 800-Meter Dash at Amsterdam.
