Cross Country Opens Season on August 31

The Wildcats will start the season at Rim Rock Farm for a third straight year
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men's and women's cross country teams announced its 2024 race schedule on Thursday (August 8), starting the season on Saturday, Aug. 31 in the Bob Timmons Classic for the third consecutive year at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan., followed by five more meets.
With first year head coach Kate Bucknam at the helm, the Wildcats will continue the season at the Gans Creek Invitational on Friday, Sept. 27 in Columbia, Mo., for a consecutive season, before running in the Bradley Pink Classic for the first time since 2018 on Friday, Oct. 18 in Peoria, Ill.
The postseason begins with the Big 12 Championship on Friday, Nov. 1 hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas for the first time since 2019. The Wildcats will be back in Peoria, Ill. for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, Nov. 15 before the season wraps up with the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Madison, Wis.
Last season the women's team claimed two 1st place finishes, at the Bob Timmons Classic and Panorama Farms orange race, before finishing 5th at the NCAA Midwest Regional, highlighted by Josphine Wanjiku with All-Region honors with an 18th place finish, tied for the best team finish since 2010.
The men's team lost four runners to graduation but return a core group of seniors from the Big 12 Championship in Alex Gutierrez (75th; 25:15.6), Matthew Hauser (47th; 24:28.8) and Tommy Hazen (63rd; 24:47.1). Hazen led the Wildcats in half the meets last season, finishing a team-high 69th in the Midwest Regional in 32:11.1.
The women's team loses three fifth-year runners in Sydney Burton, Cailan Steward and Hannah Stewart but will be led by a duo of juniors who finished top-75 in the Midwest Regional last year in Cecilia Fisher (71st; 22:02.7) and Grace Meyer (56th; 21:48.4).
