MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Kansas State sophomore Fionn Dobbin is tied for third place at 6-under par to lead the Wildcats through the first 27 holes of the Michael A. Marino Classic on Sunday at the par-72, 7,370-yard Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
As a team, K-State is in 10th place at 4-over par. The Wildcats carded a 10-over par 298 in the morning round, while they are currently 6-under par through the first nine holes of the second round.
The teams were slated to play one round per day on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but with expected inclement weather on Monday, tournament officials decided to play an extra nine holes on Sunday.
"There were a lot of positives today that we can build on," said head coach Grant Robbins. "We had some big numbers in that first round which hurts, but I am proud of the way the guys were able to bounce back and gain some momentum during the final 9 holes. The forecast for tomorrow calls for wind and rain, so we just have to maintain that next shot mentality and continue to grind it out one shot at a time."
A native of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, Dobbin recorded a 1-under par 71 in the first round with five birdies – including three-straight birdies on Nos. 2 through 4 – to tally his sixth under-par round of the season. He turned around and began his second round on fire, as he was bogey free and 5-under par through the first nine holes. Included in that total is an eagle on the par-5 4th.
Senior Alex Lindstrom is tied for 41st place at 2-over par but is in the midst of a 2-under par second round thanks to an eagle on the par-5 8th. Another senior, JP Roller, is one shot back and tied for 51st after carding a 2-over par 74 in the morning.
K-State's two freshmen, Oliver Toyer and Ville Virkkala, are tied for 65th and 70th, respectively. Toyer is at 5-over par, including an even-par first 9 of the second round, while Virkkala is one shot back.
Liberty holds a one-shot lead over No. 33 Louisville at 12-under par. Florida Gulf Coast's Nolan Harper and Louisville's Cooper Claycomb are atop the individual leaderboard at 7-under par.
The plan for the final 27 holes of the Michael A. Marino Classic is to complete the second round on Monday before contesting the final round on Tuesday. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
