MILLBRAE, Calif. – Kansas State sophomore women's golfer Nanami Nakashima posted a 36-hole score of 2-under par 140 on Monday to lead the Wildcats during the first two rounds of the Silicon Valley Showcase at the par-71, 6,084-yard Green Hills Country Club.
The Wildcats, ranked 34th in the latest National Collegiate Golf Rankings, are in third place at 12-over par 580, eight shots behind 29th-ranked Eastern Michigan and 12 shots back of No. 50 California for the team lead. K-State posted a first-round total of 11-over par 295 but bounced back in the afternoon by posting a score of 1-over par 285.
"We really battled back well after a slow start today and got right back in the tournament," said head coach Stew Burke, whose team is eyeing its fourth top-three finish of the season. "We had a lot of ups and downs throughout the rounds, but to close out this afternoon the way we did gives us a little momentum going into tomorrow. This is a course that can punish good shots due to the severity of the greens, but we are looking to build upon today's finish and see if we can move up on the final day."
Nakashima is tied with two other competitors and enters the final round four shots behind individual leader, Eastern Michigan's Baiyok Sukterm. Nakashima, a Kani, Japan, native, produced her team-leading ninth round in the 60s in the morning as she recorded a 2-under par 69 with three birdies on the front 9 and pars on every hole of the inward 9. She came back and recorded an even-par round of 71 in the afternoon as she is in position to collect her second top-five finish this season.
Senior Kelsey Chen and freshman Casey Kang are tied for 17th place at 4-over par 146 as each recorded a round of 4-over par 75 in the morning before shooting even par in the afternoon. Chen, a native of Dalian, China, was 2-over par through 15 holes in the second round before going birdie, par, birdie on her final three holes to even her scorecard. Similarly, Kang birdied her final hole of the afternoon – the par 5 2nd – to equal Chen's 71.
Freshman Keen Visavapattamawan is two shots back of Chen and Kang as she is tied for 25th place at 6-over par 148. Following a round of 5-over par 76, the Bangkok, Thailand native went 1-over par in the afternoon.
