K-State secured it's third conference win before the last match of the regular season
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team were victorious in their third Big 12 match on Friday (April 10) with a 4-0 sweep of Iowa State at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium. It marks the Wildcats' third consecutive win this week.
K-State (8-12, 3-9 Big 12) won a conference doubles point for the first time since March 22 facing TCU and was able to string together strong performances over Iowa State (4-15, 2-10 Big 12) in singles play. The Wildcats are 2-0 against the Cyclones at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium since the 2024 season.
The Wildcats #89 ranked duo, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, dominated on the no. 1 court with a 6-1 win over Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Ashlee Narker for their fifth Big 12 win this spring. Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova clinched the point for the Cats in the no. 2 spot against Julia Camblor and Stanislava Shulzhenko at 6-3.
Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska were tied at 4-4 versus Alicia Dale and Gabriella Kellner in the no. 3 position when doubles finished.
Maralgoo found success early again in singles play as her opponent, Alberto Vilar, retired early in the second set for a 6-2, 1-0 victory on the no. 1 court. It is Maralgoo's 10th singles win this spring.
Rustemova secured the second singles win for the Cats in the no. 5 spot over Dale as she swept her in a scoreless second set at 6-1, 6-0. It marks Rustemova's first win on the no. 5 court this season.
Bernovich had the clinching match in the no. 6 position with a straight sets win at 6-1, 6-1 versus Suzanie Pretorius. She is now back to .500 (7-7) in singles this season.
Three courts went unfinished with two Wildcats, Kyselova and Martaa, ahead in the first set. Back in the no. 3 court, Kyselova came back from behind in the first set for a 6-4 advantage over Shulzhenko. She was up 6-4, 2-1 in the second before stoppage.
Martaa faced Narker in the no. 2 spot where she secured the first set at 6-3 but was trying to regain her footing as she was down 2-4 in the second when the match ended. Smolinska had fallen short in the first set against Camblor in the no. 4 position, 3-6, but was leading in the second at 4-2.
On Sunday (April 12) the Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with #39 Kansas (12-9, 8-4 Big 12) in the Sunflower Showdown set for 12 p.m. at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On a well rounded performance on the courts today…
"You know, it starts with doubles and we've done a really good job with that this year. But, you know, we just haven't been all six deep in singles. And today, we really kind of proved that if we get the whole team together, we can do some pretty amazing things against really good teams like Iowa State. So yeah, I'm really proud of what our girls did today."
On facing Kansas in the last match of the regular season…
"Obviously, you know, Sunflower Showdown, in-state rival, we know they're a good team. We know we're going to have to earn and work, but you know, it's just one of those unspoken things for our team, that we're going to be excited, and we know we have to get ready for that. Just we want to finish on a good note, regardless if it's KU or not, we're going to go out there and give our best and go show it and hopefully we can carry on what we've been doing this week."
