Jul 16, 2026 | Track & Field, Cross Country
Ewing spent the last ten years at Indian Hill Community College, eight as head coach
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Director of Track and Field & Cross Country Travis Geopfert announced on Thursday (July 16) the addition of Brent Ewing as cross country and track and field assistant coach overseeing the distance and middle-distance runners.
Ewing spent the last 10 years (2016-26) at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, including the last eight seasons (2018-26) as head coach of the cross country and track and field programs. The 2024 USTFCCCA NJCAA Men's Indoor Coach of the Year guided the men's team to the 2024 NJCAA Indoor National Championship, the first title in the program's history.
"Brent has proved consistently that he's one of the best developers of talent in the collegiate ranks today," Geopfert said. "He's identified and developed incredible men's and women's athletes from the 800 to the 10k as well as sprints and hurdles as head coach at Indian Hills. He's a dynamic personality that cares about the kids. His passion shines through and I'm thrilled for our student-athletes to get the opportunity to work with him!"
This past season, Ewing guided the men's team to a third consecutive top-five finish at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships with a fourth-place finish. The squad produced All-Americans in 14 separate events, including two relays, while they had an individual national champion in the 800 meters (Raynier Galvez), three national runners-up and a total of seven top-five performances. The 14 separate All-America honors are the most by a Warrior squad at the outdoor championships.
The fourth-place team finish in 2026 came on the heels of a fourth-place finish during the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2025 in addition to the program's indoor national title in 2024.
Overall, Ewing led the Warrior men's and women's teams to top-20 finishes at both the 2026 NJCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The men's team posted a 10th-place finish at the Indoor Championships to go with their fourth-place finish at the Outdoor Championships, while the women's team was 20th at indoors and 19th at outdoors.
Galvez was named the 2026 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA after winning his second consecutive 800-meter title. The 10-time NJCAA All-American posted the fastest 800-meter run time in NJCAA history at the John McDonnell Invitational on April 24 with a time of 1:44:14, which is the fourth-fastest 800-meter time in collegiate history.
"The opportunity to join coach Geopfert and the rest of the K-State track and field staff is a once in a lifetime opportunity," Ewing said. "When visiting campus, it was clear that there was a level of energy here that was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The values, goals and vision that coach Geopfert has set forth has created a destination spot for college and professional track and field athletes. I am incredibly honored to help build upon the standard of excellence that K-State track and field/cross country embodies."
During his time with the Warriors, Ewing produced 13 national champions and 173 All-Americans. He is the only coach in NJCAA history to coach athletes with a sub-10 (under 10 seconds) 100 meters, a sub-20 200 meters, a sub-45 400 meters and a sub-145 (under 1-minute, 45-second) 800 meters.
In 2024, Ewing guided the men's team to the NJCAA Indoor National title, the first championship in program history. The 2024 season marked just the ninth year in the program's history, as the men's team scored 91.5 points with five individual national runners-up and a runners-up relay team.
Ewing was named the 2024 NJCAA Men's Indoor Coach of the Year, while he was selected as the
2021 Midwest Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year and 2023 and 2025 Midwest Men's Indoor Coach of the Year, all by the USTFCCCA.
In addition to guiding the Warrior track and field teams to national finishes, Ewing also led the cross country squad to high placings at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships, including seventh and 10th-place finishes by the men at the 2020 and 2023 events and 15th and 17th-place finishes by the women in 2021 and 2025.
Ewing recruited and trained two-time Olympic Silver Medalist Kenny Bednarek in his time at Indian Hills. The 200-meter silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics, Bednarek won three NJCAA national titles, sweeping the 400 meters and outdoor 200 meters, as well as setting four NJCAA records in his one season in 2019. Bednarek was part of the 2025 class inducted to the NJCAA Track & Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Ewing's teams also excelled in the classroom highlighted by Kaden Banks being named the 2025 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Male Team Member of the Year for the college division and a CSC First Team Academic All-American. Three Warriors – Kameron Hall, Tiffani Koonce and Bailey Taig – were named to the CSC Academic All-District teams in 2026
Prior to his eight years at Indian Hills, Ewing spent two seasons (2014-16) as a graduate assistant coach at Truman State, working primarily with the sprinters. He oversaw two Grand Lakes Valley Conference champions and 20 top-three performers with one NCAA DII national qualifier.
In 2016, the women's team finished fourth at the outdoor GLVC Championship with 61.5 points. The men's cross country team recorded their highest team finish at the conference championship with a seventh-place finish in 2014.
