Wildcats Wrap Up Track and Field Competition in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their week in Texas competing at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas and the Texas State Bobcat Invitational in San, Marcos Texas, recording top-three finishes in the women's 800 meters, 4x400 meter relay and 4x800 meter relay on Saturday.

"I thought that we had a pretty productive weekend. There were personal bests and we got good work in with most of the athletes that were here," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "Between the Texas Relays and the Texas State (Bobcat Invitational), I thought we competed well. Many of the jumps and runs were wind-aided but regardless, compared to the competition we did a nice job."

K-State opened the final day of competition at the Texas Relays, where the K-State 4x800 meter relay consisting of Alex Ferguson, Cayli Hume, Morgan Coffman and Kassidy Johnson, who ran strong race in 8:42.25, placing them second overall, behind only Baylor. The strong performance came behind an all-around team performance, including a 2:08.05 split from Johnson.

In the Wildcats' second relay event of the day, K-State battled to a third-place finish in the women's 4x400 meter relay final, in which Ranae McKenzie, Lauren Taubert, Lavaun Stephenson and Alex Ferguson finished in 3:37.51. K-State entered the finals after placing ninth overall in the prelims on Friday, where the crew ran a 3:44.54, before shaving seven seconds off their time on Saturday.

In the men's shot put at the Texas Relays, senior Brett Neelly uncorked a solid throw of 19.43m/63-09 on his first attempt, which placed him in fourth going into the event finals. Neelly would foul on his final four throws, with his best mark of 19.43m/63-09 placing him fourth overall.

Later in the day at the Bobcat Invitational, Johnson and Hume, who placed second in the 4x800 earlier in the day at the Texas Relays, recorded a top-10 finish in the 800 meters. Johnson won the event by running an outdoor personal best time of 2:09.07, while Hume placed sixth overall in 2:14.87.

After a busy weekend in Texas, K-State will travel to Arizona to compete in the Jim Click Combined Events in Tucson, Arizona on April 4-5, and the Sun Angle Classic in Tempe, Arizona on April 5-6. The pair of meets in Arizona will mark the fifth and sixth outdoor meets of the season, as the Wildcats prepare for the Big 12 Outdoor Championship on May 10-12 in Norman, Oklahoma.
