MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fueled by Addison Massey's record-breaking 24-kill performance, K-State bounced back into the win column with a straight-set victory, 25-16, 30-28, 27-25, over Texas Tech Sunday afternoon at Morgan Family Arena.
Â
With the win, the Wildcats earned their 10th straight home victory over Texas Tech (8-13, 0-9 Big 12) and snapped a seven-match losing streak, improving to 10-7 overall with a 2-7 mark in league action.
Â
The freshman's 24 kills set a school record for the most kills in a three-set match during the rally-scoring era, surpassing Nataly Korobkova's 23 kills against Missouri on Oct. 24, 2007. Massey, a native of Las Cruces, N.M., hit at a .432 clip with just five errors in the match as she became the just the third player in school history to eclipse the 24-kill mark in a three-set match and first to accomplish the feat since 2000.
Â
Other Wildcats to record 24 or more kills in a three-setter include Liz Wegner, who reached the mark three times in 2000, and Kathy Saxton (1992). Wegner set the overall three-set kill school record with 34 against Colorado on Oct. 11, 2000.

FROM THE CATS
JASON MANSFIELD, K-STATE HEAD COACH
Opening statement…Â
"Really proud of our effort today. Like I told the team, we've been working really hard for the last couple weeks specifically, and I thought we had a good week of practice. We had a good practice yesterday, and it's awesome to have it show up in matches. But they've been working hard. We've been getting better, and that's the goal for the rest of the season: to just continue to get better. But I'm really proud of them. They deserve this win. Obviously, a good Texas Tech team that's tough to beat, and we had to beat them with two challenging sets in the second and the third. So really proud of our grit at the end of those sets."
Â
On ending the losing streak and building momentum heading into KU and TCU on the road…Â
"I think that we're just going to celebrate this win. I think we fully understand how difficult it is to win matches in our conference, and so we're not going to take it for granted. And I'm going to enjoy this at least for today. Hopefully it will give us confidence. I mean, we're a good team. We're a great team and we have the capability to play with anyone. And I think we've proven that, even though we haven't won matches. And so hopefully this gives us some good confidence. But we really have to just continue to work hard during the week and then make the plays that we're capable of making. So, I love that we did that today."
Â
On the defense throughout the start of the game and how that set the tone…
"It needs to be our identity. It was early, and we've been playing some really good offenses, no question. But I think the team defense that we're capable of playing, starting with our serve, is elite. And so yeah, obviously that's pretty spectacular to have [Texas Tech] hit negative [in the first set]. But the goal was to just play great team defense and give ourselves chances to score streaks of points."
Â
On the different contributions from players that don't normally have the chance to perform in games…
"Addison [Massey] and Skylar [Brady] have taken a big load for us offensively this year, and they've done a phenomenal job. But we need more offense from our middles and our right sides, and they've been working really hard, and I feel like we're connecting better in practice, and we're starting to see it more in matches. But yeah, it's great. Again, everybody's been working really hard to improve their game, specifically offensively, and to get us more balanced. And we've been working on passing and controlling first contacts to allow us to set the middle and right side, but we're very capable of having a good balanced offense, and obviously, volleyball is a sport where the outside hitter is going to get set a ton of balls, and I love our outsides."Â
Â
On the long break between games…
"I mean we just have to get back to playing the style of volleyball we want to play. I mean, every single aspect of the game can be better tonight. And so we have to get back to work and figure out ways to be better and be more connected. Whatever lineup is out there, people have to play well together. We're going to have lots of opportunities for the rest of the season to play good teams and to compete and figure out how we're going to be better."
Â
ADDISON MASSEY, FRESHMAN PIN
On breaking K-State's three-set kill record…Â
"I didn't even know, but that's pretty cool. That's actually really cool. But honestly, I just want to celebrate the win because again, I wouldn't have been able to do that without my team behind me, with all their defense they receive, and then also the setters. Without them, I wouldn't have done it."
Â
On how the emotion felt among the team during the losing streak and how they were able to stay positive…Â
"Very determined in practice every single day. I feel like especially the last two weeks we've just come back and we've been working harder and harder every single day, getting more reps. A bunch of people have been staying after doing extra work just to get better because we've been so determined to get another win."
Â
CAMDYN STUCKY, SOPHOMORE SETTER
On her double-double (11 assists, 11 digs) performance…Â
"It's definitely fun playing two different positions at times because I feel like if one is lacking, then I can really focus in on the other one. Any way I can help my team, I'm gonna try to do that. That's important to me. But I mean, they're really great competition, and I feel like we were so close at times, and I'm just so proud of us, and we just battled so hard."
Â
On how the emotion felt among the team during the losing streak and how they were able to stay positive…Â
"You're kind of just holding your breath, like let's do this thing. Like our team was just so ready to get a win against a great team too, and I mean yeah, it's just like a let's get it done kind of mentality."
