MANHATTAN, Kan. – Dee Kennedy continues to be honored for his Opening Weekend performance Tuesday, as the junior was named the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week by the College Baseball Foundation, an award which honors the nation's top shortstop.
Additionally, the Fort Worth, Texas product was named the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Dick Howser Trophy Co-National Hitter of the Week. Kennedy was also selected to Baseball America's Week 1 National Team of the Week. The team of the week recognizes the top performers across the country and features one player at every position, including the top-performing two-way player, and four pitchers.
The junior capped his three-game Opening Weekend performance with a team-high 13 RBI, while hitting .538 with five extra-base hits, including three home runs – two of them grand slams. He slugged an impressive 1.385 while posting a .625 on-base percentage for a standout 2.010 OPS.
On Opening Day, after the Wildcats loaded the bases to force Iowa to the bullpen, Kennedy welcomed the reliever by crushing the first pitch he saw for his first homer of the season. He belted his second grand slam of the year Sunday afternoon to top off the Wildcats' dominant 24-5 win over Penn State with a game-leading and career-high seven RBI.
Overall, Kennedy produced a slash line of .500/.571/1.286 at the MLB Desert Invitational, tallying a team-high 15 RBI and 10 runs scored while going 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts.
Coming off a perfect 4-0 weekend, the Wildcats will turn their attention to the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field this weekend, as they face No. 9 Auburn (3-0), Nebraska (3-0) and Michigan (3-0). The three-day tournament gets underway for K-State on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Tigers.
