
Cats Shutout by #36 BYU 4-0 to Start Utah Trip

The Wildcats continue the trip in Utah, playing the Utes next on Saturday
PROVO, Utah- The K-State women's tennis team competed in the first of two matches in Utah, falling short on Thursday (March 26) to BYU 4-0, at the Outdoor Tennis Courts.
After #73 K-State (5-9, 2-6 Big 12) successfully clinched the doubles point in consecutive matches, the Wildcats could not fare the same against #36 BYU (16-4, 5-3 Big 12) and was unable to gain any traction in singles play. It is just the second shutout of the season for K-State, a similar score was reached against Texas Tech on March 8.
The Cats' #54 ranked duo, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, came up short in the no. 1 court against Kendall Kovick and Gracie Levelston 4-6, now 4-3 in conference play. In the no. 3 spot, freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova battled in a high scoring match, unable to force a tiebreaker against Bella Lewis and Sue Yan Tan, losing 5-7.
Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska were up in the no. 2 position 5-4 over Sage Bergeson and YuYun Chen before the match went unfinished.
Not facing a ranked opponent for the first time in two weeks, Maralgoo tried to keep up with Kovick in the no. 2 court. She dropped the first set 2-6 but battled back in the next with more momentum in a high scoring performance, but ultimately she could not pull off a comeback, falling 2-6, 5-7.
Martaa and Rustemova both lost in similar scoring straight set matches to their respective opponents. Competing in the no. 1 spot again, Martaa faced Levelston where she could only string together one point early in both sets at 1-6, 1-6. Against Bergeson in the no. 5 position, Rustemova faced a similar low scoring match, falling 2-6, 2-6.
Kyselova was the only Wildcat to lead in the first set, facing Chen in the no. 4 court. She started the match up leading 6-4 but lost momentum in the next to fall short before heading into the third set at 6-4, 2-6.
Smolinska and Bernovich also went unfinished on their courts by the time the match ended. In the no. 3 spot, Smolinska went back and forth with Yan Tan, just short by two points in the first set before ending at 4-6, 3-5. Playing Karina Mohamed in the no. 6 position, Bernovich dropped the first set at 3-6 but was ahead in the second set at 3-6, 4-3.
The Wildcats will continue the weekend in Utah, competing next against #33 Utah (12-5, 5-2 Big 12) on Saturday (March 28) in Salt Lake City at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center at 11:30 a.m. CT, the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
