#73 Wildcats have two more ranked match ups against #36 Cougars, #33 Utes
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team begin a four-match road series, starting with two matches in the mountains of Utah, first with BYU on Thursday (March 26) in Provo.
#73 K-State (5-8, 2-5 Big 12) will face #36 BYU (15-4, 4-3 Big 12) at 1 p.m. CT, at the Outdoor Tennis Courts. Since the Cougars entered the conference two years ago, the Cats are 1-2 against BYU. Last year during the regular season the Wildcats were victorious 4-3 at home while they are 0-1 playing in Provo.
On Saturday (March 28) K-State will travel to Salt Lake City to battle against #33 Utah (12-5, 5-2 Big 12) at 11:30 a.m. CT, at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
Facing the Utes for the first time as conference foes last season, the Cats were victorious 4-1 in Manhattan. The two teams previously met for the first time over 20 years ago with four consecutive meetings from 2004-08, the Wildcats 3-1 in that stretch.
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings from March 24, K-State dropped to #73 while BYU jumped almost 30 spots from #53 while Utah improved 11 spots from #44.
The Cats' sister duo, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav are still ranked in the doubles list at #54. The Cougars also have one pair Kendall Kovick and Grace Levelston at #61, although the two have not played together since January 23. In the singles rankings the Utes have one athlete, Emma Kamper at #121.
During the Wildcats last two matches at home they fell short in consecutive ranked match ups, a 4-2 result against both then-ranked #36 Baylor (March 20) and #25 TCU (March 22). In both matches K-State clinched the doubles point but could not follow up in singles play. Since conference play the Cats have won the doubles point in four of seven matches with just two team wins.
In both matches, freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova dominated in doubles action, now 6-7 together this spring, 4-3 in conference play.
Against the Bears, freshman Varvara Bernovich was successful on the no. 6 court over Gabrielle Villegas, 6-3, 6-3, her second conference win of the season. Facing the Horned Frogs, Maralgoo landed back in the win column with a straight sets victory over Victoria Gomez O'Hayon in the no. 2 spot at 7-5, 6-4. She previously had dropped four straight matches, including consecutively to ranked opponents.
