MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior guard P.J. Haggerty was among 30 players named to the early season watch list for the Lute Olson Award, which is presented annually to the top player in Division I men's basketball by CollegeInsider.com.
The award is named in honor of Hall of Fame head coach Lute Olson, who won 776 games in 34 seasons at Iowa and Arizona. He is one of just 25 head coaches in NCAA history to win 700 or more games and ranks ninth on the Division I career victories list.
Haggerty was a finalist for the award while playing at Memphis in 2024-25.
Haggerty is one of 10 Big 12 players on the list, including Texas Tech's Christian Anderson and JT Toppin, BYU's AJ Dybansta, Iowa State's Joshua Jefferson and Tamin Lipsey, Arizona's Jaden Bradley and Koa Peat, Kansas' Darryn Peterson and Houston's Emanuel Sharp.
This is the fifth time Haggerty has been named to the watch list for a national player of the year award, as he was among 20 candidates for the 2026 NABC Division I Player of the Year on Oct. 30 while he was selected to the watch lists for the 2025-26 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Men's College Player of the Year award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is given annually to the Player of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association earlier this month. He was named to the preseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award on Nov. 19.
Haggerty is off to a great start to the season, as he ranks second nationally in scoring at 22.7 points per game. His 250 points are the second-most by a player through the first 11 games and the most since Michael Beasley had 289 points in the first 11 games of 2007-08.
Haggerty has received a number of preseason accolades, including All-America honors from CBS Sports, Jay Bilas, The Field of 68, Jon Rothstein and @CBBAnalytics and All-Big 12 honors from the league coaches. He was also named to the watch list for the Jerry West Award, which is given annually the nation's top shooting guard.
K-State (7-4) wraps up their pre-holiday schedule on Saturday with a matchup against South Dakota (7-6) at 11 a.m., CT. Tickets are still available online at kstatesports.com/tickets, by calling (800) 221.CATS or by visiting the Bramlage Coliseum Ticket Office.
