K-State is back at .500 for the first time since week two of the spring
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis swept #53 Minnesota, 4-0, on Sunday (February 22) finding success in a consecutive match at Peakform Sports and Wellness Center. It's the Wildcats' first ranked win of the season, previously facing #21 Clemson.
K-State (3-3) clinched the doubles point for a consecutive match, their fourth of the season, and used the momentum over Minnesota (7-4) to dominate the first three singles matches. The Wildcats are back to .500 for the first time since the second week of the season.
"Really proud of how we played today," head coach Jordan Smith said. "You know, I thought we handled ourselves well from a kind of a marathon on Friday [against Old Dominion], and so the fact that we bounced back so well, took control, never let Minnesota get in the match, was really awesome."
Junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, the Cats #55 ranked duo, won another match in the no. 1 spot, defeating Nora Knezevic and Arina Valitova 6-4. Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska were also successful for the second time this weekend, defeating Mia Liepert and Sofia Pinto, 6-3 in the no. 2 position.
Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova were unable to string together any points, falling 0-6 in the no. 3 spot to Jeselle Ante and Yinong Ma.
Martaa found success again in the no. 2 position, winning a consecutive match. Facing Aiva Schmitz, she left her scoreless in the first set before securing the win in straight sets at 6-0, 6-3. On Friday, Martaa defeated her first ranked opponent, #98 Victoria Matasova, in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
After retiring her match early on Friday, Maralgoo bounced back in the no. 1 spot with a three-set victory. Facing Ante, she won the first set quickly at 6-1 before falling short in the next. Maralgoo secured the match in the last set almost leaving her opponent scoreless again at 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Kyselova clinched the match for the Wildcats, winning in the no. 3 position over Liepert, her first individual victory this season. Kyselova started the match with a high scoring tiebreaker decision at 7-5 and maintained her momentum to defeat her opponent at 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Two Wildcats had started their first sets before going unfinished, Smolinska was up 3-2 over Pinto in the no. 4 spot while Bernovich started versus Valitova in the no. 5 position at 0-1.
K-State will start the Big 12 conference schedule, wrapping up a five-match home stand, with Cincinnati (5-2) on Friday (February 27) at 4 p.m., and West Virginia (6-1) at 12 p.m. on Sunday (March 1).
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On an undefeated weekend and winning the doubles point…
"You know, we've been pushing the doubles point. That's our fourth doubles point of the season, which is something we've been struggling with in the past, but really proud of how the girls came out and set the tone. And obviously Martaa had a great weekend and got to see Maggie bounce back, and even Sasha get her first win. So yeah, I think we're doing a lot of good things, and we got to get ready for Big 12."
On starting conference play at home to finish a five-match home stand…
"Every team is different. I think with this team, they're kind of getting used to it. It's always easier to be on the road where you have less expectations, but I think now they're getting comfortable, and should carry a lot momentum. And we're just very fortunate to the people that come out and support us, and it makes them feel more comfortable and more powerful. So we're happy with that."
