PEORIA, Ariz. – Kansas State senior women's golfer Noa van Beek carded a 9-under par 135 over the first two rounds to lead the Wildcats on the first day of the Westbrook Invitational on Sunday held at the par-72, 6,293-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club. As a team, K-State is tied for third place at 14-under par 562.
A native of Oene, Netherlands, van Beek posted a first-round total of 8-under par 64 – tied for the second-lowest round in school history – thanks to nine birdies. Starting on No. 6, she was bogey free and 7-under par over her first 13 holes before her first bogey of the day on the par-4 1st. She came back with two more birdies to close out a round that was one stroke shy of tying the school record.
van Beek backed her morning round up with a score of 1-under par 71 in the afternoon as she is tied with Minnesota's Mariana Mesones for first place, one stroke ahead of Arizona's Nena Wongthanavimok.
K-State's first 18 holes of 11-under par 277 tied for the fifth-lowest round in school history and was the lowest of the season on a par-72 course, and the Wildcats came back with a score of 3-under par 285 in the afternoon. K-State recorded 43 birdies on the day to lead the 15-team field, while the Wildcats rank second by going 22-under par on the par 5s.
"We did a lot of things well today, but we just had too many unforced errors closing out both rounds," said head coach Stew Burke. "We are making enough birdies as a team to make a final push tomorrow, but we really need to cut out the mistakes. I know we are capable of better, which is where the frustration lies. However, I am proud of the ladies for hanging in there and not letting it get away from them today. Noa's first round was really impressive and kept us in touch with the leaders. Tomorrow is a new opportunity to shoot a great team score and see where it puts us to finish up the event."
van Beek turned in two of the Wildcats' five under-par rounds on Sunday. Following a morning 18 of even par, sophomore Nanami Nakashima recorded a round of 3-under par 69 in the afternoon, which represented her sixth round in the 60s this season. She recorded four birdies in the second round, including a bogey-free and 2-under par front 9. A native of Kani, Japan, Nakashima enters Monday's final round tied for 18th place at 3-under par 141.
Junior Julia Ballester Barrio backed a 2-under par 70 morning round with a score of even-par 72 in the afternoon as she is tied for 23rd place at 2-under par 142. She posted her second under-par round of the season in the morning with five birdies, while she carded another five birdies in the afternoon.
Sophomore Kelsey Chen scored in red figures on Sunday morning with a 1-under par 71 before a score of 1-over par 73 in the afternoon evened her overall total. She enters the final round tied for 37th place. Freshman Keen Visavapattamawan is three shots back of Chen and tied for 50th place.
No. 23 Arizona leads the field at 22-under par 554, two shots ahead of 35th-ranked Missouri.
The final round of the Westbrook Invitational is set for a 9:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start on Monday. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
