MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team won their first Big 12 conference game on Sunday (March 1) with a 4-1 decision over West Virginia at Peakform Sports and Wellness Center.
K-State (4-4, 1-1 Big 12) claimed the doubles point for the fifth time this season, starting the match with an advantage over the Mountaineers (6-3, 0-2 Big 12), leading the Wildcats to play with momentum in all six singles matches.
Junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, K-State's #55 ranked pair, started conference play 2-0, victorious again in the no. 1 spot over Julie Bousseau and Zuzana Kudlackova at 6-1.
Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska bounced back as a duo in the no. 2 position, defeating Lyla Byers and Audrey Moutama 7-5. On Friday, versus Cincinnati, they narrowly lost in a high scoring tiebreaker.
Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova fell short 3-6 to Lucia Tognoni and Laura V. Morillo in the no. 3 position.
Maralgoo and Martaa continued their winning streaks in singles matches, now combined for nine victories in the first eight matches of the spring.
Maralgoo faced tiebreakers in both sets and battled to secure a victory over Moutama in the no. 1 spot. After a 7-5 tally in the first set she fell behind in the second. Forcing another tiebreaker in the second set she kept her composure and secured her third consecutive win at 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2).
Martaa swept her opponent in straight sets in the no. 2 position. Facing Morillo she almost left her scoreless in the first set before securing a sweep at 6-1, 6-3. During the team's five-match home stand she collected four straight victories.
Smolinska clinched the match for the Wildcats with a three-set win against Kudlackova. In the no. 4 spot, she dropped the first set but came back in the next giving up only one point. Smolinska secured the match in the last set at 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, her second victory in three sets this spring.
Kyselova also faced a consecutive three-set match to start conference play, this time versus Bousseau. Playing in the no. 3 position, she started off with a quick 6-0 decision in the first set but after falling short in the next she dropped the match with two similar scoring sets at 6-0, 3-6, 3-6.
Bernovich was close to securing a straight sets win in the no. 5 spot, not allowing Byers a point in the first set. She was up 5-2 in the second set before going unfinished 6-0, 5-2 at stoppage. Rustemova was nearing the end of her first set versus Tognoni, in the middle of a tiebreaker when the match ended at 6-6 in the no. 6 position.
The Cats will hit the road for the first time in a month for the first Big 12 road matches starting on Friday (March 6) at Colorado (9-2, 1-0 Big 12) and then at Texas Tech (10-3, 1-0 Big 12) on Sunday (March 8).
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On getting wins in conference play…
"First, it's not easy to get wins, whether in conference or out of conference, so we are happy with our bounce back. But overall, we didn't perform to our highest this weekend, and that's something we have to get better, and hopefully we can move forward on the road and try to get there. We know that Big 12 wins will come hard if we're not confident and we don't believe in ourselves, and I get this as a young team, but they have to start doing it now, otherwise it won't become easier later."
On the advantage winning the doubles point is for the team…
"Obviously, we know what happens when you win a doubles point. It's easier to kind of play with a lead then not and so most of our wins have been with doubles point. So you know, we are proud of that, but just the overall kind of the confidence and playing to our level has to get better if we want to get more of these."
