Late Rally Lifts Arizona State to Series Win
Mar 21, 2026 | Baseball
The two squads went run-for-run, until the Wildcats (16-7, 2-3 Big 12) carried an 11-10 lead into the ninth inning behind Dee Kennedy's 11th home run of the season. ASU (17-5, 4-1 Big 12) responded with eight runs to put away the game and secure the series win.
"We had a good fight and played well enough to win in a lot of areas, but we came up short," head coach Pete Hughes said. "It's frustrating for all of us to fight back and have leads late, especially at home, and not finish. We'll show tomorrow and leave it all on the field."
Nine different players produced a hit for K-State in Saturday's contest, led by Dee Kennedy with his third four-hit game of the season. The junior from Fort Worth went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, that included a towering 478-foot, two-run blast in the eighth. Additionally, Shea McGahan and Nick English homered, while it was McGahan's first at K-State.
It marked the Wildcats' first home series loss since March 2024 against Texas. Entering the series, K-State had won 11 consecutive home series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
ASU tagged right-handed starter Tanner Duke for three runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a two-run blast from Dean Toigo – his first of the game.
The Wildcats immediately responded with back-to-back doubles by Grant Gallagher and Shintaro Inoue, the Big 12 Player of the Week. With bases loaded, a wild pitch trimmed the gap to one before Cadyn Karl singled through the left side to tie the score, 3-3.
The Sun Devils capitalized on a pivotal error that led to a two-run homer from Landon Hairston.
Micah Kendrick singled to centerfield to lead off the bottom of the second and was followed by McGahan's 425-foot-no-doubter – the first of his K-State career. Inoue drew a walk before Kennedy laced a hit past the third baseman to force ASU to make its first call to the pen.
Trailing 7-5, Kennedy hit against the shift with his 32nd hit of the season and scored in the next at bat from first on a double to left center by Ty Smolinski.
After a scoreless fifth, K-State sent seven batters to the plate and erased the deficit. McGahan and Gallagher were each issued a walk to lead off the inning, before the duo scored on hits from Inoue and Kennedy to take the lead. Smolinski added a run after lifting a sacrifice fly to left to make it 9-7.
ASU regained the lead in the seventh, plating three runs, including a game-tying two-run single from PJ Moutzouridis. The Sun Devils put the game away with an eight-run ninth inning, highlighted by Dean Toigo's grand slam.
