
Wildcats Start Postseason with Big 12 Championship in Tucson

Six Cats will start the weekend competing in the combined events
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State track and field teams will start the postseason with the Big 12 Championship set for Thursday-Saturday (May 14-16) in Tucson, Ariz., at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
Tickets start at $15 for single-day tickets or an all-session pass for three days is $30. All three days of competition will be streamed on ESPN+ starting with the first event of the day.
Competition begins on Thursday with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon starting at 1 p.m., CT. The field events will start at 2 p.m., CT while the track events start at 8:30 p.m., CT.
The Wildcats will have six athletes competing in the combined events, for the men, freshmen Dorian Charles, Mattix DaCunha and Chase McMullen, and for the women, freshmen Zoey Brinker and Lalie Pouzancre-Hoyer and senior Kayla Goodwin.
The decathlon and heptathlon will wrap up on Friday starting again at 1 p.m., while the field events are set to begin at 6 p.m. prior to the 7:30 p.m. track start.
The final day of conference competition will commence on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the field events before a 7:30 p.m. start on the track.
During the 2025 conference championship in Lawrence, Kan., the women's team finished 10th with 38.33 points, the men in 11th place with 39 points. The Wildcats crowned three outdoor champions last season, Jhavor Bennett (men's triple jump), Safhia Hinds (women's 400-meter hurdles) and Gary Moore Jr. (men's hammer throw).
K-State hosted the last meet of the regular season on May 8 with the Ward Haylett Invitational where senior Vanessa Mercera claimed another school record, the 400 meters in 51.83 seconds, also a new meet record. In the conference meet she is set to run in the 400-meter hurdles.
Two other Wildcats also set new meet records at R.V. Christian Track, junior Tavon Underwood in the men's 400 meters in 45.62 seconds, no. 6 in the K-State outdoor records, and sophomore Thomas Canivet in the 400-meter hurdles in 50.18 seconds, the no. 3 fastest time in school history.
